My son and I are both patients of Dr. Nelson, who was recommended to us by my son's primary care physician. I want to start by saying that our experiences with him have been very positive; he is knowledgeable and excels in his field. My son has been treated by his team for nearly two years. However, after my first appointment in November 2023, I was informed by the doctor's office that my insurance had been canceled, while my son's treatment continued without interruption. Following that initial visit, I was scheduled for a follow-up appointment two weeks later, but it was canceled due to the insurance issue. I obtained new insurance in December 2024 and scheduled another appointment, but I ended up seeing a nurse practitioner instead of Dr. Nelson. A follow-up appointment was set; however, on December 20th, I received a call about missing that appointment. I explained that I had completely forgotten and was quite far away at the time, making it impossible for me to attend. I needed to reschedule. During the call, I was put on hold. When the caller returned, I was informed that I would have to pay for the missed appointment to continue receiving services from the doctor's office due to several canceled appointments I had. This surprised me, as I have only visited this office once. I dispute this claim and request that my actual appointment dates be recorded to prove my limited visits. The caller, Lioma, was quite rude and informed me that I would not be able to see the doctor until I paid the fee for the missed appointment. I questioned whether my son and I were considered as one patient, which seemed unethical since we are two separate individuals and should each receive individualized care. That day, I also requested a phone call from the doctor himself, but I am still waiting for that call. On December 30, 2024, at around 9:20 a.m., I received a call regarding my son's appointment set for December 31st at 3:15 p.m. I inquired again about my request for a phone consultation with the doctor. Once more, my call was placed on hold. When the caller returned, I was informed that since I couldn't be seen in the office, I would incur a missed appointment fee. I reiterated my earlier question about why I had not received a callback from the doctor to resolve this issue. Paloma informed me that the doctor was unavailable and that it was unlikely I would speak with him. I am aware that this information is inaccurate. She then stated that according to the doctor's note, "The patient must either pay the missed appointment fee or seek another provider." I requested that this information be sent via email, but I was told there was no email option, and then the call was disconnected. I attempted to call back once, but the person who answered hung up immediately. When I tried again, the phone rang without an answer, and then the voicemail activated. I am very taken aback by this behavior, which I believe is unprofessional. It raises concerns about how many patients are being denied care and forced to pay missed appointment fees based on incorrect information. I can only imagine how many patients have paid this fee out of fear of not being seen by their doctor, worrying that their conditions might worsen.
